I read a bit of this before a dropped it after checking the ending. FL’s grandmother had been taking care of her but was on the verge of death from old age. Her parents had both passed away. FL was considered an illegitimate child since her mother was born from a noble family through her grandmother but her mother ran away to elope with a commoner against FL’s grandparents’ wishes. But due to her parents’ death, her grandmother took her in and actually adore FL. She left everything, including the title, to FL in her will but FL had no wish to accept it despite loving her grandmother because she has low self-esteem from her own upbringing. I haven’t read anything on the uncle so I’m not sure how he came into the story from where I dropped the story. I dropped it after checking the ending, after reading up to when she first turned down ML’s interest in her.
The beginning was basically what the synopsis mentioned. How she was a well known matchmaker and a male friend of hers asked her to help his friend find a wife. His friend, ML, was visiting London for a bit. ML wasn’t visiting London to find a wife but just to see his friend. The friend didn’t tell ML that he had got FL to find a partner for him but introduced them to each other to become friends. FL was fine with being friends with ML but he had taken interest in her very early on and was trying to court her. FL misunderstood his courtship as friendship and thought he was interested in one of her female friends. The female friend also misunderstood and thought ML was interested in her, but later ML cleared up the misunderstanding by heavily implying to FL that she’s the one he’s interested in bringing home with him as a wife. FL didn’t respond to him and just left right after that. She had her maid turned him away every time he tried to visit her after that. He told her maid that he couldn’t stay since his visit to London has come to a close and he has to return back to his estates. Her maid shipped him with her lady and told ML not to give up. He promised to return.
That was where I stopped at.
Then I skipped to the end and basically FL had rejected him again after some time and after a long time of trying to court her, he finally decided to give up. This was literally at the end of the main story. ML had just returned back home to give up on pursuing FL and was about to burn the shawl he had taken from her. It was right then, he spotted FL dragging her luggage down the road towards his estate. So at the end, she realized she couldn’t be without ML and went to his home to propose to him. They married quickly. The epilogue was the marriage.
In the side story, FL was trying to get pregnant. She seems to have difficulty with it. When she finally got pregnant, she got a miscarriage quickly and didn’t tell ML. ML’s nephew was crying to ML about his own relationship with a lady who had scammed him. ML was close with his nephew so his nephew trusted his uncle wouldn’t tell anyone. ML’s nephew has a problem where he gets obsessed with someone who can provide him with the attention he wants. He wanted to be an artist but couldn’t because he’s the heir to his family’s title. His parents had high expectations for him and he was stressed from it. The lady he was meeting was a commoner who worked in the arts so he got close to her but she scammed him a lot of money and ML helped him recover. But due to this, the nephew ended up being jealous of his uncle’s own relationship with his wife, FL. The nephew ended up having an obsession with FL. FL who knew ML was close with his nephew also wanted a good relationship with the nephew so she was nice to the nephew and kept writing letters back and forth. The nephew developed an interest in FL and confessed. FL didn’t want ML to find out but also didn’t want the nephew to keep clinging to her so she told him to go study abroad before coming back with a fresh mind. It was then ML overheard the confession and everything. He opened the door with a gun in his hand and threatened his nephew to leave his property immediately, never to come back. After his nephew left, ML was disappointed in FL for keeping secrets from him. FL told him that she kept secrets from him because she didn’t want to make him sad, She assumed a good wife is someone who can keep the husband happy without worries. He said he’s not happy with her not telling him about the miscarriage and now this. So they had a cold war for a bit before FL and ML apologized to each other and tried to work out their communication. ML had cut ties with his nephew but his nephew wrote a letter to ML that he decided to study abroad in the arts. His mother had finally allowed him to be free to pursue his wishes. As for FL, she got pregnant shortly after and they finally have a daughter. Rest of the side stories are just about their family and friends. FL talking to one of her friends who have miscarriage issues.
As for why I dropped it… well, I typically read for romance so when the couple only accept each other at the very end of a novel, I lose interest, but if you’re interested in FL’s self character development, then this is for you. Unlike other romance novel, in this one FL has to come to like herself first before she’s willing to accept ML. She kept turning away ML because of her low self-esteem. FL kept having this image of how public views her and puts herself in that image. Even in the side story, she continues to have that sort of mentality as when she married ML, she tries to adjust to become a stereotypical “good wife” for ML. Throughout the main story, she kept turning down ML because she has this image of herself as someone who doesn’t fit ML. In the beginning, when she first turned him down, she wasn’t looking for romance but she felt she was too old and not marriageable. She had an ex-fiance before who had left her to marry someone else and after that she never became interested in seeking another marriage partner. Eventually she became known as a “spinster” in society and on top of her parents’ past, she did not have a good view of herself.
