The reason is was that while she had the title she had no backing. The Duke ignoring her was common knowledge and due to her parents dying she didn’t have any support from her family. Basically all she has was a piece of paper saying she had a title with nothing to enforce that paper. Lastly she was far too timid up til now to retort.
