i guess the lower your number, the more you’re corrupted? Tenua is number 2 and he’s just the worst, and Noelle is number 9 and she’s the best. i’m guessing Ahwin is okay because his love for Noelle has fought back against the corruption.

Okay, the corruption of Tenua being a physical, tangible thing makes more sense. He probably was originally a wing, but his nature turned dark since he was literally corrupted.
