I have genuinely never understood the Chinese Century of Shame narrative. I once asked an American woman on her 102 birthday, “Looking back on your life what was the greatest surprise or shock.” I expected her to say something about commercial flight or computers or space. . . instead, she said that the greatest unforeseen thing was the 180 in US/Chinese relations following WW2. I cannot tell if this Manhwa is propaganda or actual sentiment held by Chinese citizens. Yes, the communist government and the West are at odds. . . shucks, even Russia and Iran are weary of Chinese expansionism. What I find interesting is the idea that someone would think that anyone in the US or Europe would look down on the Asian Miracle or the rapid advancement of late 20th-century China. I also think its interesting how someone could not understand why others would fear a country that’s growing and expanding in every direction. . .
