What I can’t get past with this story, is that this is a society of whale people. Yet the orca’s parental structure is nothing like the animal itself.
You very rarely see lone orcas in the wild. They have a very complex pod dynamic to the point that pods from different regions, have different languages. Something that you don’t tend to see either in other animals, is that sometimes, fully grown males will stay with their mother’s pod permanently; And when they don’t, they create bachelor pods instead.
They, like us are social creatures. They depend on each other to survive. Calves even more so. Which is very relevant to this story. A calf relies on it’s mother to prevent it from drowning for a period of time, before learning to do the act self-sufficiently. They will literally not leave their mother’s side for years. Learning how to hunt, communicate and travel the vast oceans to survive. And for whatever reason the mother dies, the rest of the pod take over raising calf.
The only accurate thing so far, is that the family is run by a matriarch, but that is where it ends. They wouldn’t leave their young calves to prove their survival through violence, intimidation and self-preservation. A calf will literally die without being taken care of by other orca’s. All that would lead to, is a lot of dead babies, and subsequently the death of the entire pod.
The author could’ve picked a multitude of different animals that would’ve fit this survival of the fittest narrative they’ve got going on much better, than the well-known family orientated orca. Genuinely, why?!? Some bird species, snakes, fish, amphibians, reptiles anything but a whale.
This whole trial scene doesn’t make any sense either. But that’s a whole other kettle of fish I don’t want to get into.
the laws in this place is a joke, basically if you are strong you can literally do anything with a rule like this society would break, it is called revolution baby, well i normally don’t like kid fl because it feels weird how she do everything in a child body but this one was funny i just hope that grandmother never get her redemption because she is just trash and i hope that the time pass here as well because fl adult self is so cool, some stories stay in childhood for so long that i just give up in the middle
