When he said he’s gonna die, that means as outstretched the idea of retaining past powers is, if your current body can’t handle it, it would usually go two ways;
1. The mediator for that power transplant will take damage. (in this case, the dragon kid)
2. The receiver’s body will take damage. (Our

Of course its not just that, there are even more risks such as:
1. If you take your past powers, does it alter a alternate reality? (Such as, you’re risking of destroying the past lives because you’re forcibly taking their powers, ultimately changing the orders of fate). Remember, when you’re traveling inside a time space, it’s a super risky gamble if not done right
2. If you’re taking a power from a dead person’s thing, then is that power gonna die? If so then the dragon kid’s sacrifice will be in vain.
