Well, no. Actually, you can’t “just plant more”.
Here’s some real gardening/agriculture knowledge for ya’ll: watermelons of the supermarket type shown here have a very long growing season. They need a lot of sun, a lot of heat, a lot of nutrients, and a lot of WATER–conditions that are often contradictory. You can get two harvests a year if your conditions are optimal, but it’s all from the same plants because it takes so long for them to start setting fruit and mature properly. They don’t do frost AT ALL, but don’t transplant particularly well either, so getting them growing ahead of the good weather is tricky and covering such big plants is a hassle and a half, especially at scale. Rich families (like filthy, STINKING rich) in my latitude used to have whole glass hothouses dedicated to melon and cucumber production, just for their own use.
In a situation like this, where the mature plants have been destroyed? No more watermelons for the year–there just isn’t enough TIME. Better to renovate that field and replant with something fast and cold hardy, like peas, hardy greens, or beets (not that the beet ever really caught on in Asia), or a cover crop to prep the soil for next year.
Sorry, I’m just not sure other readers grasp the sheer volume of sunk labor being depicted here… Yes, bad crops happen, but there are layers to this situation that people who aren’t farmers or gardeners will miss if it’s not spelled out for them.
