I read this scene in the novel and in it there were parts more intense that are not shown in the graphic version.. for example..

Matthias is complex to understand. Layla accepted his complexity, understood the motivation behind his actions and focused on his positive traits while acknowledging his flaws. She understood that he might not always make the Right choice but he’s doing everything for her. She appreciated him for who he was at his core, She loved him despite his Morally ambiguous behavior, potentially by seeing his internal struggles and capacity for GOOD even when he was making questionable decisions.

Matthias doesn’t really express his emotions normally and he’s more reserved or private about his emotions. I think he’s kinda learning about emotions by watching Layla react to his actions. To Judge a person like Matthias, we need to watch his words and actions rationally.
