Here’s my take:
Matthias is undeniably in love with Layla, but his pride prevents him from showing it. He struggles to accept that an orphan like her has captivated him, especially since she doesn’t treat him with the admiration he’s accustomed to. This bruises his ego, leading him to act arrogant rather than kind. Layla’s own pride and indifference toward him only fuel his haughty behavior.
On the other hand, Layla refuses to acknowledge her feelings for Matthias, convinced that he’s merely playing with her. The vast difference in their social status makes her feel like nothing more than a servant in his eyes, and the Duke’s harsh treatment only reinforces her doubts. Although she’s aware of her attraction deep down, her pride keeps her from revealing it, knowing that confessing would be futile.

Layla’s problem is her pride, overthinking and easy to assume. Matthias just wants to approach her and be friendly with her since the beginning but she is the one who is drawing a line. Acting afraid and anxious when in fact she had a crush on him! Hahahaha! That is why Matthias will get angry at her because she is the one provoking him first.

Omg…so man can anybody who read the whole novel actually tell me please if he does like her or not? Because he’s acting as if he likes her but talking as if he hates her and it gets confusing, I just hope…is not just lust he feels but 0 emotions because then it’s 😬.

This novel gives realistic views about how Duke falls in love with commoner Layla when their status is causing their relationship to be forbidden. Unlike other novels nowadays which are making it look easy to marry a man with noble status. They had to go through so much emotional turmoil to be together and had to break social norms.

Layla is afraid to be vulnerable and show her true emotions, that’s why she is using her pride to avoid being hurt in front of Matthias. Both of them are trying to crush each other’s pride to avoid being hurt and to leave a long lasting memory even through pain and tears. THEY really need to communicate openly and properly. They sometimes say things they don’t even mean.

Matthias is being mean to her and hurting her because he wants her to remember the tears and pain he caused her now that she is leaving him. He hates that he can’t resist his feelings for her, he hates that he lost control for the first time in his life, he hates that the so called perfect life he thought he had is starting to see a crack because of his feelings for her. That’s why he’s saying hurtful things he doesn’t even mean.

Layla always shows this pride where its unnecessary for example she always rejects goodwill shown by Uncle bill, Kyle and Matthias when they don’t mean any harm. She should show this pride to Claudine instead and talk to her like this. Claudine humiliates her by showing false pity.
