1. Because of Kyle’s mother. Mrs. Ettman is very ambitious woman. Her ambitions was above her child’s happiness. She thought that her actions were for Kyle’s sake. But actually she thought about herself, her “noble status” was over everything, she was scheme woman. She had very low opinion of Layla. Kyle as loving son never could handle both “mother” and “wife->Layla” together in the same position. And that’s why Layla said to Kyle “There is no place in the world where we can be happy together, just the two of us”. It shows that they never could be happy. Their way will be always separately.

NOW KYLE instead of confronting his mother for her wrongdoings, would ask Layla to run away with him. He wouldn’t even try to pacify her mother to accept her somehow. This was really one of those disappointing things Kyle did in the novel.

Matthias is caged in arvis by his responsibilities as a duke and he was afraid that Layla would flee this cage so he wants to cage her too with him for life. But he doesn’t he indirectly took revenge, he thought that he’s just enjoying the drama but instead he felt bad that Layla cried.
THIS STORY is all about Matthias learning about ABSOLUTE LOVE and feelings with Layla.
