It’s a bit sadder in the novel, he kept trying to reach for Penelope until something broke in his arm but he didn’t notice. I always liked Eclis but I don’t think he’s a good fit for Penelope. In the end he has a somewhat good ending though.

I dislike but feel pity for Eclis. He’s had such a shitty life, and when he finally finds someone in life he wants to dedicate himself to. Eclis comes to realize that he is just being used. Not only is he being used, but he understands he will only be “loved” if he is useful.
Though I will never forgive him for betraying our FL, I can’t necessarily hate him as a character (as of now; aka what’s been presented here in the manhwa, not the novel).
Also, it’s sad that if he had just revealed himself as a swordmaster and continued to have pure feelings for Penelope before he met Yvonne, his dream of being with Penelope would have come true since Penelope just wanted the fastest option away from her family.
