You’re forgetting she heard him say she will never be family to him. She misunderstood because his mother was talking about adopting her, but still, she thinks he only wants her to stay because of her skills (and probably in her mind, that’s her only real value). I get that it’s annoying, but I’d rather the paternity plot get wrapped up before the romance.
