This must be soo hard on him..not only could he not trust his family but his only friend betrayed him too..that is crazy I would go crazy not being able to trust know one..but I think it would also make me stronger i would do what ever I can to protect my niece because she is the only one I would trust

Well is normal for him not to trust her…
Because she’s criminal you know, if i was him i’m not gonna trust her even though i love her…

I don’t agree with ya’lls takes. This man, who has grown up not trusting anyone around him claiming to be trustworthy (including family), knows this woman is a criminal who, by her own admittance, cares most for money. He knows she is dangerous and partially unhinged (given her previous responses to interactions with other nobles), and she does not try to present herself reasonably at first.
She present the fact she knows of his niece as though she it threatening him. She doesn’t bring it up in a regular manner, and instead goes through elaborate hoops, stringing him along.
And she, through her own admittance once more, tells him she figured out the reason he was acting like this was to keep his niece safe.
Any normal and sane person would not phrase this interaction as a threat. All he knows, from the very short amount of time he knows her, is that she is suspiciously skilled and has little to no known information on her. And yes, she is cooperative, and seems to be kind, but he doesn’t know how far that kindness extends, and he does not want others to get caught in the crossfire.
The ML in this series seems to notoriously undervalue himself and allow himself to be used and misunderstood by others for survival as to not bring anyone down with him. His niece is his last, untouched and innocent family member he has.
He has reasonable suspicion not to take the FL’s words at face value. Its not just his life on the line in his eyes, but a child’s.
Im of the opinion that both the FL and ML are well written and intricately written characters, and instead of immediately going “why wont he trust her? Red flag,” we should actually look at the entire picture. Both of them have their secrets, and it’s not like the FL was all too open at the start too. Their relationship is still at its beginning stages, it’ll take them some more time to actually trust one another unconditionally, especially when one of them has trauma around trusting others wholeheartedly. I doubt the situation with his friend is going to be of any help to his emotional state.

I agree with the previous comment.

idk I kind of hate the ml like I get it it’s really hard to trust her but you’re treating her so harshly
