I think the main difference between Hyun and his dad is that Hyun created strong bonds/relationships with people, whether on purpose or not, by being kind. His dad did not, making acquaintances at best and never really forming a community, whether friends or family. This led to isolation and him losing his job due to having no one to back him up when he was wronged. This made him feel as if all hope was lost, creating inner turmoil that everything he had done would never change anything, as if he were fated to be bad from the start, and he derailed from there. Whereas Hyun had a community to show him that people still believed in and trusted him when things went wrong.
