If I understand correctly. He thinks she is pursuing him because her father ordered her to but she is in love with someone else. So he figured a contract marriage for a year would be perfect. They split after a year so she can be with the guy she loves. He mentioned contract marriage when he was eavesdropping.

I don’t understand his logic, his other engagement failed bc the girl loved another man and he didn’t want to get in their way. Why is he pursuing her when he thinks Charlotte has another man?
