Ok what i GUESS (not spoiler but pure guessess) from reading so far is that:
he is an illegitimate son of the previous count and was being mistreaten in the household. The people who worked there were aware of the abuse but did nothing, hens the guilt and seeking forgiveness.
And this woman he writes to may be his mother or half blood sister (probably a reletive who had been kind to him during childhood.)
