If I remember correctly, in the novel Noel actually threw the puzzle… or at least a piece of it…. out of his window in a fit of anger. So originally he felt guilty because he knew he couldn’t explain how he lost the puzzle piece without admitting he lost his temper. He knew that if someone destroyed his toy in a temper, he’d be furious with them, so he thought the Princess wouldn’t forgive him. I thought I’d bring it up because an accident vs tantrum are very different reasons for losing something & it better explains his reluctance to confess.
