Its a culture that looks down on illegitimate children making them feel very inferior and some are treated inhumanely by the legitimate family/others as well as abused/used just to get some semblance of recognition or admiration. Of course this will be a very sore point for the girl especially when ex jerk brought it up. She liked him in the past because he was the first person to treat her kindly his subsequent behavior messed her up. Her feelings and actions are justifiable, when he fixes that the positive change will come. Plus she is still conflicted emotionally the child from the present and the new person in front of her.
