The empress (light mage) was mad because the emperor (Philip?) redid all history so everyone would obey him, and therefore create a new dynasty. However the light mage (empress) threatening to expose the truth locked her in the palace and set it on fire. That was the memory she had before. therefore cursed his descendants of the curse, and she could open the door to that basement, because she is the reincarnation of the light mage (empress) and is only one who can lift the curse.
Why it is her:
The world tree invited her to come and save the world (the world tree is a popular theory, and is in many Manhwas already) so the tragedy won’t happen again. Therefore she is the reincarnation of the light mage (empress) and her powers are given to her instead.
