I feel like there was a retcon at some point and it wasn’t explained. His relationship with the hero has been vastly improving in the past tenths which makes the beginning seem more unlikely that he would have said those things. The saintess going off and him being silent because he can’t admit his own weakness? Sure but way the hero acted vs their now known history doesn’t click.

This has romance tag imagine How funny It would be If mc get together with the hero? Ahhaha after this flashback he looks more like a limited Guy with heavy responsibilities than a trash one, i might be wrong though
