I hate that they make it seem like it’s her fault… Yes, unfortunately her actions helped him reach this point, but how was she supposed to know she could actually trust him after everything? Her trauma was rooted in betrayals and being left behind, so of course she was having trouble accepting him. And it’s not like she neglected her son because she wanted to, he just unfortunately looked too much like his father so she remembered wilhelm whenever she looked at him and had trouble sorting out her feelings, post-partum not helping anything either. You can see in the earlier chapters that she feels awful about how he was being treated and even when she meets him again, she’s trying hard to overcome her issues in order to give him all of her love. Not every parent starts out perfect and she’s obviously working on it, I don’t know why mothers are always held to such a high standard yet the dads aren’t. Hardly anyone brings up how he also ignored the son all the years that he had him and even just saw him as a tool to get to her right before they came on this trip…

Even excluding that, she honestly has every reason to keep the relationship cut off, but she just loves him too much to do so. Sure, it came out that even though he wants dietrich dead/out of the way, deep down he doesn’t want anything bad to happen to him, but there’s still the issue of the 3-day rape. Everyone keeps conveniently forgetting about that and infantilising Wilhelm, as if he’s done no wrong and can never do any wrong.

Yes, he has his own trauma too, but that doesn’t mean they can just wash over his issues and act like they didn’t happen just because of it. As soon as he got his memories back, he started to manipulate her and everything around her. He wanted to let her believe she was in charge but while he was controlling everything out of sight. When she found out and felt rightfully betrayed, he still tried to control things by relying on her feelings, diverting her attention, and not revealing some things. When she found out more of what he hid she stayed away because she became disgusted by him and she let it sink in just how unstable he actually was. When they asked for the son she figured he might be treated better there than to have him continue being neglected by her and she thought she could finally get away from the imperial family. When her trauma got the better of her and she tried to kill herself after talking to him, sure he stopped her, but then he made that deal with her of her body for 3 days for her freedom, she had no choice. So a broken man raped an injured broken woman that he loved because he didn’t know how else to express himself or even attempt to fix what they had.
Again, not saying he doesn’t have his own trauma and I don’t hate him, but there is still some accountability on his part that should be addressed. Both in story and by the readers.

And like, I know she’s also not great and has her flaws (the comments never shut up about them), but I think I end up more empathetic towards her because of seeing how much hate she always gets in the comments :/

This story is supposed to show the relationship between 2 not-so-great, broken people and their love for each other and the struggles in that relationship that comes with how each of them are dealing with their trauma. Yet so many people are trying to find a “bad guy” and a “good guy”, and the bad guy is somehow always her. It’s frustrating. I read angst and tragedies *because* of the complicated relationships, and to see how the characters play off each other. If I wanted to read something with more clear cut morals and good vs evil, I wouldn’t be reading this. Read what you want, but why read angst if you were looking for a more classic romance with the leads always on the same page? Why go to the grocery store if you were looking for shoes? Why go to the beach if you hate the way the sand feels on your skin?
