This is a new conflict that didn’t exist in the novel. There was just no way anyone wouldn’t know he loved Edith. He was kinda obvious about it. Again, he was the one that avoided Edith’s execution. And there was a scene at the ball that he publicly and loudly made Catherine apologize to Edith. There are others more.
I kinda wish Lize isn’t removed from the narrative too soon and that we’ll see her again. She still has an use in the story
