I’ve read the first 23 chapters of the novel (which is less than here but nobody translates further), and there, his thoughts are explained more thoroughly. He’s simply confused by his emotions and has become attached to her. In the past, those who aided him always had ulterior motives or intended to harm him. However, he can’t understand why she helped him without any hidden agendas. So now, he wants to ‘figure out her intentions’ so he can’t let her leave. He repeatedly convinces himself that his actions are justified because he needs her divine power (pretty much lies to himself lol).
