Feline papillae (we generally think of them as tastebuds, but those are clustered around the bumps on your tongue, they aren’t exactly the same thing) are shaped like spines–think the hooked side of Velcro, only harsher. They’re designed to scrape dirt and water out of fur, deal with water surface tension when lapping, etc. Since cat anatomy is surprisingly uniform across all the sizes, a big cat’s tongue is just like a small cat’s tongue, just magnified. In other words, bigger SPIKES.
