He handled his guilt at the death of his wife in childbirth by scapegoating the ‘useless’ child and gilding the ‘useful’ one.
The reality is, they already had what, 3 awakened children? But he wanted a *stronger* heir, so they kept having children until it killed her (which is, historically, exactly what happened. Divorce wasn’t uncommon because it was frowned upon–divorce was uncommon because “Til death do us part” happened a whole lot more quickly when antibiotics weren’t in the picture, or transfusions). It was *his* greed for influence through a talented heir that killed his wife/their mother. He couldn’t handle that, but he still wanted to protect his family’s influence–so, he blame shifted onto Riri and coddled Ryan. Win-win, from a dysfunctional funhouse mirror perspective.
Having already created a black and white dichotomy, it is very hard for people who employ this coping mechanism to adjust it. That would involve more self-reflection than they can bear to do. It’s why the best strategy for family scapegoats is usually to go no contact.
