Lulu89, their feelings come from mutual respect and admiration. It doesn’t always have to be over the top or dramatic. They seem to have similar personalities, the quiet kind of strength. Her mother tried to force her into role, even willing to help kill her own son, so that she could rule from the shadows (like the duke/uncle is doing with the emperor). If Adelaide really wanted power and status, she could have stayed in her homeland and sacrificed her brother. She was around all those guys in the guild she made and never developed feelings for them. She also didn’t want to tarnish her family’s honor by running off. She let herself be married off and left home knowing she couldn’t go back. The main reason she wanted power as the empresss was because she saw how the people suffered. She’s deeply compassionate and even though the emperor took her power, she’s still trying to help people. Lionel has been trying to help people for years, but was overruled at every turn. When Adelaide came along and actually started making a difference, he was inspired and motivated again. He hasn’t tried to hold her back or restrict her and even offers her protection while they continue their efforts to save a kingdom she doesn’t even belong to. He’s the first person to do that for her. I can definitely see how their relationship grew into love.
