I can only guess that they get it stuck in their mind that they are living in a book and that the books contents are set in stone unless it’s something that they themselves have personally changed or altered from happening.
I read a few where the book’s world tries to make the events happen and that if the original culprit for something is removed from the event then someone else would replace them so it would still happen even though it would be slightly different.

A lot of things you’ve done weren’t ever in the novel. Geez why do they keep writing fl’s who can’t seem to figure out that if they change things it’s not going to be like the novel? Why are they always surprised when things are different?
