The shittiest explanation would he died during the fall with the 7th corps commander and all that’s happening now is his “fantasy” of not wanting to be weak, be a hero and revered by everyone for his strength

tbh I think his split personality existed before the hero died because of the dream. he was on the battlefield (not on the demons’ side) and we could see the other ‘person’ (or version) of him. so ye
