I think James is just a loyal and simple-minded musclehead… At this point of the story, we know he fell inlove at first sight with Olivia during their academy days when she asked for directions (i think) then he looked her up and found her name.. When he made a deal with the King, he knows exactly what he wants and that’s Olivia… The only unfortunate thing about James (for me) is that he’s selfish.. It never crossed his mind wether Olivia would want him or not.. He didn’t think how his mothers would react bringing home a lower ranking wife… He didn’t listen when she cried out for help (the letter, I’m sticking to the 2nd life).. So he’s completely baffled and confused why his well-provided-for wife would leave him while he’s out ‘providing’ for her… That’s why we see him forming ideas that maybe Ian is the bad guy here.. I think the finale for James is him finally understanding that communication is important for a healthy relationship.. IDK.. I think he’s not genuinely bad, just misguided 😊
