   Kissing of feet is a symbol of devotion or praise, removing it’s romantic roots it goes all the way back to pilgrims kissing the feet of the statue of Saint Paul in Rome. It was also used with Kings and Queens as an act of repentance because nobles kissing someone’s feet is an act of repentance, it was a fancy way of begging. It was usually used when a noble committed a crime, therefore making them put their pride to the side and put their sacred lips on something dirty. Yes, their lips were considered sacred around the 15 and 1600’s.
