I think she’s trying to protect her. She’s making her to be self reliable and protecting her early from engagements. I think she’s also trying to make her forget that appearance isn’t always important
I don’t think it’s the right way to do it, but it seems like she’s trying to protect her step daughter. From her father & the world at large. She’s wants her to focus on her mind, character, & manners, rather than her appearance. Either someone will love her for what matters, or she’ll get old enough that the chances of being vain and shallow will be gone.
