She is deplorable in many ways but in her defense she thought her son had died and was traumatized. She was a commoner whose father sold her into slavery and all she has is her looks. If she was more humble she wouldn’t be so hated but she wants to be loved and with the taste of power she now craves all of it.
In the novel it shows her character better especially near the end; all she wanted was to be loved and accepted. Her methods were wrong as she wasn’t taught any better. I dislike her but also pity her.
