I think she’s using the book to distract herself from not being able to go home to get her winnings. It’s obvious the book is magical, but if she thinks in that direction things become more hopeless. She doesn’t know anything about magic and even her magician brother doesn’t realize what it is, so how would she be able to figure it out? Better to delude herself that she just needs more muscle..
