In my opinion: did he expect to die, I doubt it but if he was caught trying to kill fl then he would have been able to spin it as he was being threatened by the grand duchess to do this cuz he has the contract stating she wants the fl dead. And why not incriminate the grand duchess more by using someone close to her? Especially now that he’s dead there will be more blame/scrutiny on the duchess as she would be seen as immature and jealous as she may not be able prove that Alfonso and fl are in a secret relationship esp as fl was with Raphael at the ball and a marriage is expected between them and also like looking at the culture they won’t really be much on Alfonso to say as they would expect him to have a mistress like his father (even though he won’t do it ). she (grand duchesss) would just be seen bat s**t crazy and obsessive.
Why did the Duke himself attempt to kill Ariadne?? He could have easily asked someone else, especially a commoner/mercenary with no ties to him, to assassinate her😐
