This is common in empires. Each son is from a princess of a different kingdom/family. And instead of showing favoritism to the eldest son he has the sons compete for the throne. Then that kingdom has leadership of the empire for that generation. Also, by having the princesses held hostage in the capital, you insure the allegiance of the other kingdoms. You also prevent inbreeding making weak/crazy aers.
