Yes, Ines is using Carcel, and yes she doesn’t care that she’s using him. No, she doesn’t actually owe him anything. She is doing what she needs to do to be free.
You need to stop seeing this series as a feel-good romance, it’s not. It’s the story of a woman who lived two tragic lifetimes filled with betrayal and strife, who was driven to suicide in two lives.
Now, she doesn’t want a romance, she doesn’t care for one either. She knows the happy life she got with the LOVE OF HER LIFE AND FATHER OF HER CHILD is not to be and that she would only hurt him.
She only wants independence, in a empire where women are property, not considered adults unless married and not independent unless widows or divorced.
This is not a feel-good romance, this is a practical woman who suffered a lot and it’s just trying to gain independence the only way she knows how, marrying the guy with more chances to cheat on her and letting her go.
Carcel being in love with her is unfortunate for her, she doesn’t need to “open her heart and trust him” because she doesn’t want a happy marriage in the first place, she wants to be alone and free from the empire’s yolk.

I really understand both of them. But somehow, Inés didn’t be with with Carsel long enough to fall in love with him even after being traumatic in two past lives. She had suffered in both her previous lives and had no contact or keep in touch with Cárcel enough for trust him. As a contracting partner, it’s OK and he’s great. But giving her heart isn’t easy if the wound hasn’t healed yet. And many things are not clear enough for her. Not as us, the reader.
