Well, he did really cheat during their engagement. It’s during Ignes’s illness. He misunderstood that the suddenly distance Ignes caused means he was abandoned without asking her ONCE. So, Carcel decided to play around with women to get her attention.
Other than it clearly failed as Ignes was recovering at her place all along without being able to go out, he and ended up going too far and slept with one woman.
The rumour avoidably became well-known that handsome Carcel is a casanova since then, and he never denies that at all. It’s a long misunderstanding until during chapters that Ignes found her necklace used to give to her ex-husband artist in a jewellery store and later got sick from mental illness again. I’m not sure about the number anyway.
