Ovid appears to deserve most of the credit for blackwashing Andromeda. The few surviving Greek art pieces with Andromeda predate Ovid by centuries and depict her as fair-skinned or at least lighter-than-dark-skinned, but after Ovid described her as dark-skinned, the blackwashing of Andromeda began to rear its head here and there.
The Renaissance bigots just weren’t enlightened enough to see Ovid’s wisdom in blackwashing Andromeda. We had to wait centuries more for such enlightened individual to grace us with their presence.

Racism back then was completely legal as well, so those paintings were revered as true and magnificent pieces of art.

Fun fact about Andromeda that I just found out:
It’s a real Greek mythology story.
It’s actually based in Africa in a place called Aethiopia ( around modern day Sudan and Egypt area ) Therefore making Andromeda dark skin black. A description of her dark complexion was even written in Ancient Greek plays and texts but unfortunately Renaissance painters are deeply racist and couldn’t stand or fathom the idea of black people being seen as pretty so they made her white in all paintings and art.
