She can’t be mistress since the marquis is unwed, she could be treated as concubine but she isn’t because she isn’t one so I understand why she felt a sense of ambiguity about her position cuz he never state it himself she and the marquis is in “debt” relationship according to both of them so at best she could be described as the marquise’ woman
