The dude has PTSD, that’s not something that can be easily waved off. Several men who came back from the Vietnam War never recovered, fell into drinking and drugs just to dull their minds. The author is actually doing a decent representation of how PTSD effects the mind. He’s not in his right mind, he actually doesn’t know what his doing.
