In the book it’s described better. Basically, he’s the secretive head of the tradin company and asks her to only call him “Captain”. After the gold mine, the secrecy is increased a bit so he can move to build security and so forth. She wonders if he knows Antes but since someone of his stature was unlikely to work with mercenaries day to day she just assumes he isn’t him. So far this is moving much faster than the book.
