Coming back from chapter 21, my explanation was essentially correct, but I see my way of wording has made it seem that Fersen is the victim in this story, completely ignoring Luna. I sincerely apologize because originally, that wasn’t my point! I was trying to highlight the fact that his father and environment could be the SECOND MAIN cause to his behavior towards Luna. I’ll do better next time.
TL;DR | I find it sad when MLs face treatment from selfish fathers. It’s clear Fersen clings onto Luna and her father because they were so kind to him, unlike his father. But the way he expresses himself with luna is delusional and annoying, but also in a way of self-validation in his head. (The way I see it. I’d like to be proven wrong.)
It’s quite disappointing to see him like this. MLs with fathers like this always wind up in a bad spot because they never had a supportive male figure in their lives. Well, in this context, there /is/ one, which is Luna’s father. However, Fersen’s approach towards Luna and her father has been problematic. The way he registers it in his mind is a form of self-validation, ignoring the treatment he receives from his selfish father at home. I can’t say for definite if his mother influenced his behavior because we have yet to see them interact.
As quoted in chapter 4 by Luna, “He’s delusional enough to think everyone loves him, and he’s a nuisance to everyone around him. Someone who only thinks about himself.” Aside from his father’s treatment, he is deluded enough to expect Luna’s father to always be on his side when it comes to Antes, as a kind of self-validation to believe he is correct. Delusional enough to ignore the fact that Luna is clearly uncomfortable around him and with his behavior, and only concerned with himself with problems he needs to solve, as demonstrated when attempting to persuade Luna’s father by reminding him of the past and then asking him to let him see Luna so she can finally be on his side again, validating his behavior and himself. (But that’s also because he needs his father to forgive him. Imagine what punishment would await him if he fails his father.)
Fersen was drawn to Luna and her father’s kindness and compassion after not receiving it from his father. The burden of being a duke’s heir weighs heavily on him, so it’s evident he’d prefer to live like any other child, which he could do at Luna’s place. Fersen literally stated that this is why he was able to tolerate his father’s abuse for so long. It’s sad.
