@GhostlyQueen he wasn’t acting like he didn’t care. He just has a hard time with feelings because of all his trauma and the abuse he endured since childhood.. He loved his mother more than anything else, and now he loves his sister, who is the last semblence of his mother, more than anything else. He just wasn’t taught to properly express love. The way he gave the heads of monsters to his sister at the begening is a very good example of it. He lacks the common sense to understand that a monster’s head is not an appropriate gift for a young girl. Just because it is exotic and vluable, he thinks it is a good gift for his sister. He thnks about things like rarity, value, and other overt characteristics when he gives something to his sister. He lacks the emotional intelligence to make a proper decision that actually might be a good gift to his sister. He is the biggest victim in the story, if you ask me.
