It’s not childish to ask for allies when you are about to have a difficult conversation. Adults do it all the time. The pinky promise is just an inside joke to them and a reference to the beginning of the story. That is very common in a lot of stories and novels. I’m 18, and I still like holding my mom’s hand sometimes. It’s just skin on skin contact, a way of showing affection, very similar to people in a relationship holding hands.
