A bit earlier, Bjorn’s grandmother(?) tried to mention that he was treating Erna like his favorite among the two cats she kept when he was a child–turns out he had no memory of the cat (Charlotte) at all, which would wait at the window for days after he went home.
For people who know animals–mammals, at least–that’s very telling. Bjorn acts like a person who likes pets, but has never once had to actually CARE FOR a living, breathing creature. He’s vaguely aware that they need to be fed, watered, sheltered and cleaned up after, but that’s what servants are for. He’s completely missing the part where they need social interaction on *their* terms as well as his terms.
Humans are–well to say they’re more complex is to make a vast assumption–better at understanding (and being hurt) that they’re being treated like an object.
Cats, dogs, horses, and humans have two options when they can’t take how they’re being treated anymore–act out, or act in.
A cat might poop in your shoes and knock all the dishes off the china cabinet or bite and scratch if acting out, or lick themselves obsessively to point of bald patches and hives if acting in.
A human might become violent or vindictive if acting out, depressed and self-harming if acting in.
Erna’s harmless, so she getting extremely depressed and Bjorn’s too emotionally clueless to understand what’s happening.
