I don’t think the Princess ever betrayed him. She was most problably unaware of what happened, and then when she became aware, she just sent a note to him and apologized. I mean, the note was not even written on a nice piece of paper and not even stamped with the Imperial Seal, that means she sent a hand-written note secrety to him instead of sending him an official letter.

btw didn´t the knights originally tell him to run away so that at least one member of the royal family would survive? so that zombified guy coming back after however many years and blaming him for it all before killing him also wasn´t exactly nice..
