The kiddo is right, he has his circumstances and so does she. She wants to be safe and then safely leave prob to not implicate this nice family further, and he has this demon being an uncertain factor. I think being siblings works too, but if she plans to leave eventually (she wont, is how the stories tend to go) cutting ties in case she implicates them is better.
