…I took it as symbolic–like when he was looking at her hair in the banquet. That Askan has come to associate the color black with the starry night sky that he’d never seen before, and with Tanasia/Thanasia’s kindness (treatment as of a person of equal kind–that is the root meaning of ‘kindness’).
Rather nicely executed symbolism, for this genre.
