I get the first few chapters are just an irrelevant sad backstory, but this part caught attention/curiosity. Which of these is the situation supposed to be?
1. That that woman was secretly the baron’s mistress (and thus easily sold)
2. That a baron has legal rights to use any commoners on their land as slaves for any duration they choose (and so they can kidnap a woman, rape her for a few years, and then set her free without worrying about their reputation and/or other consequences)
3. That she was illegally kidnapped but nobody is going to help a commoner prosecute a noble
