I strongly think that he killed his mother in a berserk outburst. The Duke was just cradling his dead wife in his hands. The wife his son killed. After that the Duke lied about him losing control and killing his wife to spare the son guilt. There is no way a man who loved his wife that much would kill his wife like that.
